Bundesliga Team Review: SC Freiburg

Updated: July 22, 2014
SC Freiburg - Stefan Mitrovic

A sudden exodus of its top players such as Max Kruse and Johannes Flum to name a few almost tore down Freiburg’s hopes of surviving last season. Adding more burden to its plethora of problems was the limited budget that the club has to manage. However, the genius Christian Streich was able to salvage the squad from total wreckage.

Despite its shortcomings, SC Freiburg has managed to feature during its European competitions. Yet, their performances in the domestic league greatly suffered.

Considered as Bundesliga’s 5th best squad during the 2012/2013 season, Freiburg fell into the 14th spot last season and almost hit the relegation zone if not for Streich’s tactical acumen and the players’ resilience.

Match to remember

SC Freiburg thrived through stalemates during last season’s first half. The squad found it hard to bring back the prowess they once had when their star players were still with them.

But then again, prior to the winter break, Freiburg gained its first three (3) points after securing a 3-0 victory over the Nurnberg. Likewise, it must be noted that they were one of the clubs, which forced the defending champion, Bayern Munich to settle for a draw.

Match to forget

The even steven finish with Bayern could have been more dramatic if Freiburg was able to replicate its feat during their second meeting. Unfortunately, the Bavarians were keen on collecting more points and thrashed them with a 4-0 victory.

The scene-stealers

Admir Mehmedi was a certified Freiburg stunner, collecting twelve (12) points and four (4) assists during the season. Definitely, he was one of the key figures, which helped Freiburg avoid relegation.

Latest additions

The loss of Matthias Ginter to Borussia Dortmund is yet another major blow for Freiburg. But then again, the arrival of centre-back Stefan Mitrovic and the return of full-back Sascha Riether is expected to give the strength that Freiburg needs in order to become a top online betting favorite of Bundesliga once again.
