Compared to what it accomplished during the 2012/2013 season, there is no doubt that Mainz 05 did better last year.

The squad’s rank catapulted to the 7th spot after struggling in the 13th spot. As a matter of fact, the club was two (2) points short of qualifying in the Europa League. What is more impressive was the fact that they accomplished such feat even if their scoring machine and certified favorite of online bookie, Adam Szalai left the club Nevertheless, this did not prevent the other players from stepping up to the challenge and bringing Mainz 05 into the center of the spotlight.

Match to remember

The 4-2 victory over Hoffenheim is one of the highlights in Mainz’s overall performance last season. A game of two halves, Hoffenheim was ahead by two (2) goals until Mainz’s late rally headed by Eric Chuopo-Moting generated four (4) goals to give them the win.

Match to forget

Its 2-0 loss to the struggling Eintracht Frankfurt readily embarrassed the squad.

The scene-stealers

News of Szalai’s absence hurt and caused worries for the club. Nevertheless, the Japanese poacher, Shinji Okazaki filled the void that Szalai left. He was the club’s top scorer, amassing a total of fifteen (15) goals in twenty-eight (28) appearances.

Chuopo-Moting was also impressive for scoring ten (10) goals. Unfortunately, he is set to leave Mainz 05 and will be joining Schalke 04 soon.

Latest additions

The 20-year-old Stefanos Kapino is one of the new faces to join Mainz 05’s ranks this season. The trusted goalkeeper was part of the Greek contingent that went to Brazil. He may have bot appeared in the pitch, but his contributions during his under 21 years, cannot be readily ignored.
