Bundesliga Team Review: Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen- Bernd Leno

Disappointment eclipsed Bayer Leverkusen’s performance last season. The squad almost stole the runner-up spot from Borussia Dortmund and sealed another qualification in the Champions League, but a losing streak that started during the holidays continued until the first leg of the season’s second half.

Bayer’s deteriorating form resulted to Sami Hyypia’s sacking. Sascha Lewandowski replaced Hyypia and fortunately, his (Lewandowski) entry was just in time to salvage the club from falling out of the major European competitions.

Match to remember

Bayer was the first squad to force the online betting favorite,  Bayern Munchen into an even steven finish.

Match to forget

Although Bayer’s late comeback is worthy of plaudits and recognition, its exploits in the Champions League barely showed some grit and teeth.

Manchester United kept them at bay with a clean sheet and five (5) goals whilst the French powerhouse, Paris Saint Germain slapped them with four (4) solid goals.

The scene-stealers

Other than Stefan Kießling and Heung-Min Son, who collected goals for the club, there was Bernd Leno who transformed into a formidable stalwart of defence and goal keeping expertise. His presence as well as outstanding saves denied many of Bundesliga’s goal-starved poachers.

Latest additions

After a long wait, the midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu will finally set foot in the Bay Arena.

Calhanoglu has been a long time target of Bayer. His playmaking skills is expected to add strengthen the club. However, it is only this season that transfer talks have finally materialized.
