Hertha

Home Hertha BSC (The Old Lady) currently sit on the sixth spot of the Bundesliga table, while away Hamburger SV (The Red Shorts) are pinned at number 12. Both of these teams’ most recent matches were less than spectacular, probably disappointing supporters and online bookies alike. The Old Lady only clinched a draw (with Nunberg 2-2) while The Red Shorts suffered a bitter defeat (from Hoffenheim 1-5). This coming August 24 (local), the sides will be paired for a fixture and have their chance to improve their form. Unless they call on a draw, one of them will bite on sweet victory.

The sides’ recent feats and failures

Hertha BSC and Nunberg scored two goals apiece in their latest match, thus the draw result. The riveting battle saw Hiroshi Kiyote of Nunberg salvage the points for his side for a late free-kick after going 2-1 behind in the crucial second half. The Old Lady’s Daniel Ginczek fell on the ground in frustration after failing to secure their opponents’ numerous scoring chances in the first-half. Elsewhere, the Berlin-based side were clearly successful in other (earlier) tourneys. They finished their DFB Pokal appearance with a win over Neumunster 3-2 and kicked off their Bundesliga campaign with a soaring victory over Eintracht Frankfurt 1-6.

Unlike Hertha, Hamburger have been volatile in the pitch ever since the new Bundesliga season took its onset. They debuted their campaign with a not-so-motivating draw with Schalke 04 3-3 and followed it up (their most recent) with a disorienting defeat from Hoffenheim 1-5. One of opponents’ star players, Roberto Firmino, scored two goals in the match and created three excellent assists to propel his side to a massive rout over The Red Shorts.

And the victors are…

Of the last five matches that these sides have met, Hamburger had given more imposing performances—winning three of those and drawing only with Hertha for the remainder.  Hertha last managed to win over their opponents in 2008. However, the circumstances this season are quite reversing the intended results. The Old Lady are making substantial improvements from their passable performances in the past, while The Red Shorts seem to be losing a hold to their power. This upcoming match, therefore, will see Hertha win over Hamburger for the first time since a few years ago.
