Match Date: 26 January 2014 (local)

Match Venue: HSH Nordbank Arena

Hamburg’s Bundesliga fate fell under the hands (or foot) of Mainz’s Shinji Okazaki who created three goals (one via assist) to lead the visitors in a 3-2 victory at the HSV-Arena. The Japanese forward scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season and helped Nicolai Muller net his eighth strike of the campaign to earn Thomas Tuchel’s men all three points against their hosts, who were reduced to 10 men after Tomas Rincon was issued a red card.

Hakan Calhanoglu and Rafael van der Vaart both netted goals for Humburg (the former opening the scoring) but still failed to clinch the victory. The squad finished 2013 with just two points above the relegation zone.

Outside Bundesliga, Die Rothosen perform much better. They were unbeaten in their last four matches (friendlies), trouncing such clubs as Kairat 0-3 and Basel 4-2 as well as forcing draws with Arema 2-2 and Vitesse 0-0.

Schalke 04

Despite a very strong defense and superb goalkeeping job by Ralf Fährmann, Schalke were still unable to bag the victory in their tourney against Nurnberg. The match ended goalless, leaving the clubs without any choice but to share points. Hiroshi Kiyotake led Nurnberg’s early assault on goal but Schalke’s goalkeeper was quick to deny it. The hosts actually created almost all the chances but Die Königsblauen were very good at preventing their opponents from converting and disallowing them to produce their first league victory at the same time.

Currently 17 points off the table’s foot, Jens Keller’s men are spending a tenth consecutive week in the top half. They have so far conceded 28 goals since day 1, but have scored 32 to render them a positive goal difference.

Football betting tip: Schalke will be a major threat for Hamburg. The visitors’ relatively good league form is enough of an indicator to determine the potential result of this match: Die Königsblauen bagging all three points.
