Cologne were last season’s 2 Bundesliga champions while Hamburger were among the top-flight’s least impressive sides and only remained in the tournament through winning the relegation play-offs. Form-wise, the former are apparently above-par against the latter.

Losing only four times, drawing 11 times, and winning 19 times out of 34 matches, Cologne posted the best score for any club last season in the second-tier league of German football. The side were six points clear of their nearest rivals, Paderborn 07, and produced the most impressive goal difference (with 33) in the tournament. In addition, two of their players emerged as among the competition’s top scorers, with Patrick Helmes netting 12 goals and Anthony Ujah with 11.

In the pre-season friendlies, The Billy Goats extended their beautiful run by winning the majprity of their matches. The likes of Schwarz-Weiß Essen, Bonner, Velbert, and Trabzonspor succumbed to their beatings while only Frankfurt and Ingolstadt hindered them from making a perfect streak.

Hamburger’s run in the German top-tier football was far from being okay. The side were almost eliminated from the competition, if not for a successful relegation play-off against Greuther Fürth. For four non-consecutive weeks last term, they were in the bottom two and were hardly above the top ten for the most part of their campaign. In a nutshell, Die Rothosen were a huge disappointment last season.

In the past few weeks, however, Hamburger seem to be recovering fast from their appalling Bundesliga performance. The squad have so far been largely successful in their recent friendlies. Out of nine matches, they won in seven which include an unbelievable 0-15 away win against Horst. Only two clubs—Guangzhou Evergrande and Lazio—prevented them from making a clean pre-season record.

Football betting tip: Cologne will bag all three points from this tourney against Hamburger.
