Ligue 1 Preview: Reims could barely knock down Lille

Updated: August 15, 2013

When thinking about which side between Lille and Reims will emerge triumphant, choosing becomes an easy task. Even football betting tips from the most dynamic online bookies will pinpoint one obvious pick: Les Dogues (Lille).

This August 18, as the Ligue 1 new season continues, the two teams will be pitted again with each other. The last time they had a duel was a few months ago, in the previous season. The tourney was single-handedly conquered by Lille 3-0. Back in December last year, they also had a match and it ended in a draw 1-1.

When it comes to the degree of consistency in their matches, Reims are not making any promising form. Losing two battles out of four (Rennes 1-2, Sporting Charleroi 0-1) and succumbing to draw in the remainder (Valenciennes 0-0, Sochaux) are certainly not a good streak to make an impression. Hubert Fournier’s men debut performance in the season opening was a bland start for the highly anticipated tournament. They ranked 14th last season and if they remain frail in the pitch, their mediocre standing will potentially not change this year.

In contrast, Lille have shown excellent drills in their last few matches (and even if the older ones will be included). In the Club Friendlies, René Girard’s men successfully posted conquests over equally powerful sides, including Dijon 3-2, Mons 2-1, Red Star 2-0, and Troyes 1-0. They also opened the French top-tier football new season with a bang, winning over Lorient with a one-goal lead 1-0.

Lille ranked seventh overall last season, and their satisfactory kick-off performance this year may suggest a beautiful conclusion by May next year. They are definitely going to win this tourney against Reims, and many of the thousands spectators who will watch the battle at the Stade Auguste-Delaune II (Reims’ home court) will similarly root for the away team.
