Nineteenth of January this year was the last time Evian TG and Olympique Lyonnais had a meeting, with the match eventually resulting in a draw 0-0. Eight months forward and the sides are back to renew a combat for the Ligue 1 trophy, hoping to gain new supporters and acquire greater interests from online bookies. The battle will be held on August 31 at the Parc des Sports, Evian’s home ground.

After drawing with Sochaux 1-1 in the season opening, home Evian continued their Ligue 1 campaign rather poorly. Both Marseille and Reenes displayed razor-sharp drills to thrash Pascal Dupraz’s men in their second and third stints in the tournament, with final scores tallied at 0-2 and 1-2 respectively. Their mediocre performances in their most recent Club Friendlies were even more castigated by the onset of the French top-tier football. This is evident in the side’s uninspiring slide in the table—from an already-risky 16th spot last season to a relegation-prone 20th placement this term.

Lyon’s form for this season’s Ligue 1 is showing good signs. They debuted their campaign with soaring, back-to-back victories over Nice 4-0 and Sochaux 3-1. Team coach Rémi Garde could not be any happier, with prodigies Alexandre Lacazette, Yoann Gourcuff, and Clement Grenier leading the players on how working as a team is done. However, the side plummeted in their third Ligue 1 battle, when Reims successfully assaulted Lyon with a 1-0 win. Nevertheless, the squad are backed by a strong ensemble and rising from this “small” fall would be easy with the coming matches.

While they did have draws with Evian in their two most recent matches, Lyon have historically been more successful than their opponents. Especially now that Evian are on the verge of relegation and the superior side maintaining energetic fixtures, there is hardly a reason why Lyon will not conquer this match.
