Match Date: 16 August 2014 (local time)

Venue:  Parc des Princes

Defending champion and certified online betting  favorite, Paris Saint Germain (PSG) embarked into another slow start in the season as Reims forced them to a draw. This is not the first time that the Parisians ended their first Ligue 1 match in a stalemate.

Bastia’s encounter against Marseille also ended in an even steven finish. But other than a mediocre finish, it looks like newly-appointed manager, Claude Makalele and his men will face more trouble due to the violence that erupted prior to the Marseille clash/

The contenders

Paris Saint Germain

The result of PSG’s match against Reims was no different from what it accomplished last season. The squad also debuted into the season with a draw.

PSG had the chance to secure the lead when a penalty was granted to Zlatan Ibrahimovic. However, the talismanic striker was denied and Reims took the opportunity to take the lead. Despite the miss, Ibra scored again to pull-off an equalizer.
Edinson Cavani also had his scoring chances, but the former Napoli striker failed to deliver.

SC Bastia

Christopher Maboulou’s fantastic display secured the lead for Bastia. But a determined Andre Pierre Gignac and a disappointing own goal from Romaricgave Marseille the lead. Gignac scored again, but Junior Tallo converted a penalty and Maboulou, during the match’s last minutes scored the equalizer.

Despite the excitement brought by the close match, the violence, which occurred before and after the encounter, eclipsed the said beautiful game. The said incident resulted to forty-four (44) injured policemen.

Prediction, scene-stealers and flops

It is easy to say that PSG is the overt favorite of the match. Expect Ibra to carry the team into victory.

Cavani has not been at his peak since his transfer to PSG transpired last season. It seemed that the prolific striker is having difficulties in playing wide and alongside with Ibra. El Matador is in dire need of stepping up his game if he is determined to make an impression.

Like Cavani, team captain, Thiago Silva has yet to manifest a strong performance. It looks like the international defender still rues Brazil’s bitter fallout in the recently concluded, World Cup.

What the odds say

Odds for PSG are pegged at a profitable value of 1.14. Yet, should the incumbent champion, continue with its lackluster performance, a draw valued at 8 is also deemed lucrative.
