Toulouse and Lyon debuted in the new Ligue 1 season with rather contrasting results. While Lyon managed to earn three points from their opening match, Toulouse suffered a painful kick-off.

TFC were barred from entering top 15 after they incurred a defeat from Nice at the opening of France’s top-tier league. The side conceded three goals to their rivals, although they were not necessarily rendered goalless by the Alpes-Maritimes side. The attack was good, accentuated by the first-half goals by Braithwaite (44’) and Ben Yedder (45’), but did not feature prominently in the second period. It was in their defense that the main problems arose. They failed to prevent their foes from creating chances and were quite weak at defending set pieces.

The defeat was Alain Casanova’s men’s first downfall in six matches. On pre-season friendlies, they earned clean sheet victories over Ajaccio, Sete, and Athletic Club as well as held two other clubs (Luzenac and Montpellier) in a draw.

Olympique Lyonnais

They may not have been able to clinch the top spot for Ligue 1’s opening week but at least Lyon have proven that they are among this season’s front runners. The side opened their campaign with a win over Rennes 2-1 with goals from Malbranque (64’) and Lacazette (73’). This was preceded by two-legged successes against Mladá Boleslav in the UEFA Europa League. Thus far, Les Gones have been unbeaten for six straight matches in all competitions.

Hubert Fournier’s men remain very strong in creating chances via individual skill. They are also very adept at attacking set pieces as well as protecting their lead. What they need to improve on is their ability to brawl in the air, the ‘area’ they are not too good at dealing with.

Online betting tip: With the drive to retaliate, Toulouse could hold Lyon in a draw.
