Ligue 1 Match Preview: Nice vs. Ajaccio

Updated: January 14, 2014

Match Date: 18 January 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Allianz Riviera

Undefeated for five consecutive matches (in all competitions), Nice are somehow making a solid comeback. They were winners in two of their three most recent Ligue 1 fixtures and seized the silverware in the Coupe de la Ligue and Coupe de France. Of those four victories, three were clean sheets (they fought against Sochaux twice in those occasions, and won both).

In the top-tier league, Les Aiglons jumped one spot higher than their standing from last week, from number 15 to 14. This can be attributed to the seven points they obtained from their three most recent matches (two wins, one draw), following a horrible streak of defeats from weeks 11 through 17. With these impressive showings, the side are on their way to climbing into the higher reaches of the table. But in their next outing, the climb will not be easy because there are several men in the pack who were sidelined.

They may be among the league’s underdogs, but Ajaccio have shown how fierce they could get if they are provoked. They lost their match against leaders PSG, but the latter had to exert tremendous effort to achieve such result after Ajaccio made them sweat in a very interesting duel. L’ours, through Eduardo, opened the scoring in a surprising lead in the sixth minute. PSG struggled to deliver an equalizer, with Ajaccio’s goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa on close watch of any volley from his team’s opponents. It was not until the 41th minute that the league frontrunners finally cancelled out the scoring, thanks to the agile assist of Ibrahimovic to Lavezzi’s maneuver. PSG won the fixture over with a 74th minute goal by Matuidi.

Ajaccio are still placed at the table’s bottom after only earning nine points from all their matches. But with the ‘impressive’ performance they displayed in their tourney against PSG, there is still hope for them to get out of the relegation zone and earn another Ligue 1 appearance next season.

Online betting tip: Ajaccio are very determined to win their next battle after a frustrated attempt at PSG. However, Nice will be very protective of their noticeably improving form. The latter could narrowly win this brawl.
