Ligue 1 Match Preview: Montpellier vs. Nice

Updated: January 21, 2014

Match Date: 25 January 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Stade de la Mosson

After 11 weeks of winless runs, Montpellier have finally earned three points from a single match when they met up with Sochaux at the Stade Auguste-Bonal. This also marks the squad’s first away victory of the season, easing their relegation fears with a 2-0 conquest. They are now four points clear of the bottom zone, but still have to make both ends meet in order to fully veer away from the dreaded spots.

La Paillade’s win at Sochaux was crucial as it was a deciding factor of whether they will remain in the safer positions or go back to the relegation zone, which was their bitter refuge in the season’s second week of matches. Fortunately, Anthony Mounier and Siaka Tiene were very sprightly to save their team from the plummet, with the goals Montpellier scored coming from both of them (one for each period).

Determined to turn their horrible week 11-17 streak around, Nice have been earning points from their four most recent matches. Two of these fixtures finished in clean sheets, one gave them a three-goal lead, and the remainder was a defensive draw.  The may still not be completely safe at number 13, but there is a big chance for them to re-enter the top half if they are able to maintain their energy and momentum.

Nice’s latest tourney rendered them victorious over struggling Ajaccio 2-0. The latter lagged behind progressively just after Christian Bruls opened the scoring for the former. Despite Ajaccio’s best efforts, they were unable to equalize with Dario Cvitanich rounding off the win in the fixture’s dying seconds.

Online betting tip: Montpellier and Nice are both gradually recovering from their dull showings in the season’s first half. In this battle where both of them are hungry of more wins, a very tight clash should not come as a surprise. They could hold each other in a draw at the end of their face-off.
