Marseille made it five weeks without a defeat but only picked up one point from a draw with Nantes 1-1. While the result was not necessarily terrible, it was a dismaying finish that bombarded a major blow on the side’s UEFA hopes. The current sixth placers should win all their remaining matches and hope for the sides above them to incur losses for them to qualify for the Europa League.

With a massive 4-1 victory at Bastia, Lyon closed their gap with fourth placers St. Etienne back to two points and clear their way into an almost-certain European seeding. Les Gones obtained all three points through an excellent team work that saw Bafetimbi Gomis, Nabil Fekir, Bakary Kone, and Alexandre Lacazette score one goal apiece. The powerhouse was so sprightly that Francois Modesto’s second half goal was dwarfed by Lyon’s enormous success.

The squads’ last four matches provided Lyon with eight points and Marseille with only two points. Two massive victories by Rémi Garde’s men left the José Anigo side with little room to turn the deficit around. They may have managed to draw with their opponents on two occasions but those were not enough to at least parallel the robustness of Lyon’s form.

Marseille have a reliable faculty in the attack, able to create plenty of chances through long shots, by individual skills, and through balls. They also do very well in defending set pieces. By comparison, Lyon perform superbly in terms of counter attacks and free kicks. They also have the knack for finishing scoring chances, although they are also equally susceptible to committing errors.

Football betting tip: Marseille and Lyon will finish their brawl with equal number of goals.
