Ligue 1 Match Preview: Lorient vs. AS Monaco

Updated: January 27, 2014

Match Date: 01 February 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Stade du Moustoir

Despite clearly being the favorites to win, Lorient ended their brawl against strugglers Valenciennes sharing the points. The draw was notable for having all the goals (1-1) scored by Valenciennes, except that one of those was an own goal. Saliou Ciss’ error put Lorient in the lead before the second third of the hour but an equalizer from Gregory Pujol made sure that the home side will claim the vital point.

The draw left Lorient still pinned in 10th place with 31 points, and climbing to a much higher position will prove difficult especially that the squad currently have several men on the bench: Audard, Doukoure, Coutadeur, Quercia, Barthelme, and Chaigneau.

AS Monaco

Monaco’s last five matches gave them one draw and four victories, including their most recent one. Their match against Marseille was crucial in that it was a good opportunity for Les Rouge et Blanc to narrow their gap with table toppers PSG, who drew with Guingamp in their latest fixture. Monaco are now just three points short of the top spot, and that was even more impressive as they achieved it without top player Radamel Falcao.

Falcao’s season-ending injury would be a major blow for the club, but Claudio Ranieri has high hopes that his squad could still clinch the victory with proper pitch regimen and careful planning. Apart from the Colombian forward, Jeremy Toulalan is also sidelined for a red card.

Football betting tip: With both sides’ key players absent, this battle could result in a very tight clash. While a spree of scoring chances could be created throughout the fixtures, it is in the row of equalizers that result will eventually rely upon. A draw should be expected.
