Ligue 1 Match Preview: Lille vs. Lyon

Updated: February 21, 2014

Match Date: February 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Grand Stade Lille Métropole

Lille are already in a safe spot at the table’s upper reaches, but they still fight as hard as they could in order to secure an even more esteemed position. In their brawl against Evian TG, the side denied their opponents from having their first victory in nine Ligue 1 fixtures by holding them in a draw. Ryan Mendes’ injury-time equalizer decided the outcome. Preceding this were scores from Evian’s Kevin Berigaud and Cedric Mongongu plus Divock Origi’s first-half equalizer.

Les Gogues remain among the favorites in the competition, currently ranking third behind PSG and Monaco with total earnings of 45 points from 25 matches. They have so far delivered 28 goals and conceded 16.

Amid the dissapointments they exuded in their Coupe de France defeat, Lyon still managed to pull off  a stunning performance in Ligue 1. The top-tier victory awarded them three goals against Ajaccio, who only netted once and lost all three points to keep them in the league table’s bottom. Gueida Fofana placed the hosts in the lead two minutes into half-time before Jimmy Briand doubled it midway in the second period. Although Dennis Oliech nailed a goal for the struggling Corsican side in 81st minute, Bafetimbi Gomis made sure that all three points would end up in their possession just before the end.

Lyon last three matches from all competitions yielded them all possible results: loss from Lens in the Coupe de France, a victory at Ajaccio in the French top-tier football, and a draw with Chornomorets in the Europa League. Their Ligue 1 performances have placed them at number six.

Football betting tip: Lyon’s recent success cannot completely cover up for their slight inconsistency problem. Lille, who more in form and disciplined than their opponents, could earn all the spoils from this tourney.
