While both Guingamp and Saint-Etienne received berths in the Europa League, they were two contrasting forces in Ligue 1 last season. For one, the former ranked in the bottom half of the league table while the latter finished comfortably within the top four.

Guingamp spent one of their match weeks in the relegation zone last term and have since struggled to move themselves up to the top half of the rankings. Finishing in 16th place, the side apparently had a tough season. They suffered from 18 defeats while only being able to accomplish 11 wins. They were trounced appallingly by such sides as PSG, Nice, Lyon, and Monaco who rendered them goalless. Their worst defeat, however, was the one from Bordeaux four weeks before the season finale when they conceded five goals and netted only one.

Jocelyn Gourvennec’s men’s home matches were more bearable than their performances on the road. They played a total of 19 home matches, of which 18 finished successfully (most notably, their 5-1 rout of Sochaux). They, however, incurred seven downfalls inside Stade du Roudourou.

Saint- Etienne

One of the most consistent sides last season, Saint- Etienne were able to keep themselves within the top six for the vast majority of their top-flight campaign. They may have fallen off the eighth and tenth spots on the ninth and 13th weeks, respectively, but they effectively used their impeccable resilience to remain one of the top clubs with the genuine potential to carry the league title.

Les Verts attained 20 victories from 38 appearances last season and ranked fourth overall by the tournament’s closing. This gave them berth to the Europa League play-off round for next season. In the pre-season friendlies this summer, however, the squad seemed minimally inspired. They finished goalless in both their matches against Gent 2-0 and Port 0-0.

Online betting tip: Saint-Etienne will thump Guingamp with a two-goal lead.
