Evian and Caen’s most recent face-off was already two years ago, when the latter played for Ligue 1 before being relegated to France’s second-tier tournament. The match eventually ended in a draw. Meeting for the first time in two seasons, the sides should have mustered enough experience to produce a good display.

Evian TG

Les Croix de Savoie saw their campaign last season bump on numerous buckles. They once plummeted into the relegation zone and narrowly avoided demotion on the latter half of their Ligue 1 run. They ultimately landed on the 14th spot of the league table after securing two straight wins (and clean sheets) against Nice and Sochaux in their last top-flight fixtures, thus securing another season in the French top-flight football. They, however, might be most remembered for their magnificent rout of PSG 2-0 on December, becoming the first side to break their rivals’ unbeaten streak in the league.

Last month, for their pre-season friendlies, Evian forced Lorient in a 1-1 draw and inflicted Brest a 1-2 home rout two days later. With these results, the side have been unbeaten in their last four meetings. This should translate well when they enter Ligue 1’s new season.

Caen are back to the top-tier league after they were granted promotion from Ligue 2. The club ranked third overall last season in France’s secondary football division having scored 64 points in 38 appearances from 18 wins and 10 draws. Although they only ranked third in the final tally, they actually scored the second best goal difference (+21) amongst all participants, behind champions Metz (+27) and in front of runners up Lens (+18).

Despite ending the season as one of the top clubs, Patrice Garande’s men failed to make a smooth season finish. Their last three fixtures in Ligue 2 only yielded two points with six goals conceded. In their recent friendlies and pre-season preparations, the team were not able to show sizable impression. They were rendered goalless by Le Havre and were beaten in a clean sheet by Amiens SC.

Sports betting tip: Both Evian and Caen will score at least one goal from this battle, but the home squad will eventually bag all the marbles.
