Caen and Rennes are generally performing well in Ligue 1 as of the first three weeks of the competition, although some mishaps were inevitable for them. Both sides are currently ranked within the top half of the league table.

SM Caen

Caen debuted in the season with a skyrocketing achievement: they ended the first week of fixtures at the table’s summit in spite of being only newly promoted to the French top-flight tournament. The squad defeated Evian TG in their opening battle with goals coming from N’golo Kante (1) and Mathieu Duhamel (2). In their second battle, however, Caen were rendered goalless against Lille before they went to their winning ways again with a victory against Reims from their most recent league match. Kante scored his second league goal of the season while Herve Bazile obtained his first. Of the current top 10 squads, Caen are one the only three clubs (the others being Lille and Montpellier) to produce two clean sheets from just three matches.

Stade Rennais FC

Rennes’ awful start in the new season—a 2-0 defeat from Lyon—was deservedly turned around by a striking 6-2 victory over Evian TG in their second Ligue 1 appearance. This helped them escape the relegation zone and barge into the top eight. In their third battle, Les Rouges et Noirs only produced a goalless stalemate with Saint-Etienne, but the one point achieved from this battle was crucial enough to help them climb one spot higher in the rankings. Coach Philippe Montanier is setting up an integrated system to improve his team’s form, and it must work fine throughout the competition for them to earn a match better position than they did last season when they ended up in the bottom half.

Football betting tip: Caen and Rennes will share the points.
