Both Ligue 1 superpowers, Bordeaux and Monaco displayed opposing results in their top-flight debuts. Les Girondins earned all the marbles from Montpellier while last season’s runners up settled in an embarrassing 1-2 home defeat from Lorient.

FC Girondins de Bordeaux

Bagging one goal and keeping their rivals’ scoring at bay, Bordeaux kicked off their season with a resounding success. At number seven, they are currently among the top half occupants of the league table—ahead of other powerhouse clubs such as PSG, Lille, Toulouse, and well, Monaco. Diabate netted the match’s only successful goal.

While it is still early to determine who will make it to the top by the end of the season, Willy Sagnol’s men made a marvelous head start for their campaign and if this is source of all their confidence to maintain a positive streak, then they are headed to a magnificent run.

AS Monaco

It was a bad start for Monaco in the new season of the French top-tier football as they saw themselves thumped by Lorient inside their very own stadium. The battle at the Stade Louis II produced three goals overall, two of which came from Aboubakar and Lavigne while one was netted by Falcao.

Les Rouges et Blancs lost two promising players—James Rodriguez and Eric Abidal—to other clubs, which could partly explain their poor performance in the tourney. Rodriguez, who was hailed top scorer of the World Cup 2014, signed for La Liga’s Real Madrid while Abidal transferred to the Greek squad Olympiacos. But regardless of the absence of these two, Monaco still have a good chance at turning their campaign around. They are quite talented in finishing scoring chances, as well as resilient and skilled in attacking set pieces.

Online betting tip: Monaco will strive to redeem themselves from their disastrous opener by thumping Bordeaux—no matter how hard it will be.
