Metalist are returning to the competition to redeem themselves from last season’s ‘embarrassment.’ Trabzonspor, meanwhile, are aiming to surpass their Round of 32 finish also from the previous edition.

Metalist Kharkiv

Metalist had a controversial run in the Europa League last season. They were disqualified from the tilt due to an alleged match-fixing and UEFA decided to replace them in the play-offs instead with POAK, who were eliminated by the Ukrainian side in the third qualifying round. Despite this, they are still considered as a very strong team in the Supreme League—although not as strong as Dynamo or Shakhtar. In fact, of the last 14 top-flight matches they engaged in, only two resulted in defeats, three in draws, while all the rest were resounding victories.

A total 25 goals have been scored by Trabzonspor from their last 15 matches for a goal average per game of 1.67. Of this streak, six resulted in victories capped by the 0-5 away rout at Kayseri Erciyesspor in the Super-Lig. However, they have also been rendered goalless on five occasions and conceded 13 goals to indicate some flaws in their defense. It was from this dilemma that they lost their chances of barging at least into the Round of 16 last season in the Europa League as they were beaten by Juventus 2-0 (both legs) at the Round of 32.

Europa League betting tip: Metalist will open their Group stage campaign with a triumph against Trabzonspor.
