Everton and Wolfsburg have had a string of absences in any of UEFA’s most important club competitions in the past few years, owing to their mediocre performances in their respective domestic leagues. Now that they are back to the continental scene, can they pull off some spectacles and impress spectators this time around?

Everton

The last time Everton participated in the Europa League was more than four years ago when they only reached the Round of 32 following a 4-2 (aggregate) rout by Portuguese squad Sporting CP. They have since never been able to compete in any of UEFA’s top continental tournaments as they have often finished just outside the crucial spots in the English top-tier football. After ending their 2013-14 Premier League campaign in fifth place, The Toffees have successfully regained berth in the UEL for the current season. However, they may need to work on several of their playing styles as their most recent results (starting in July) from all competitions have never given them a single victory.

Wolfsburg

Wolfsburg’s last participation in the Europa League was in the 2009-10 season when they reached the quarter-finals after being beaten by Fulham. They were winners against Villarreal in the Round of 32 as well as against Rubin Kazan in the Round of 16. They would then spend the next four seasons without any participation in UEFA’s top continental club tilts. This drought in their international campaigns might have pushed them to do better in Bundesliga last season. And indeed they did so much better that they finished the season within the top five, thereby securing them a ticket to the UEL Group stage. In the past few weeks, however, Die Wolfe have been struggling with inconsistency. Out of their six most recent fixtures, obly one (in the DFB Pokal) gave them triumph.
