Borussia Mönchengladbach and Villarreal both did not participate in Europa League last season, although the former have history of winning the tilt (twice) and the latter finishing as semi-finalists (twice also).

Although their most recent match inflicted them with a 2-4 home loss to Bochum in a club friendly, M’gladbach have excellent previous performances to brack about. They were unbeaten in almost all of their fixtures last month, with their strongest result obtained in the UEL play-offs against Sarajevo 10-2 on aggregate scoring. They also seized a 1-3 away victory against Homburg in the DFB Pokal. At the German top-tier league, however, Die Fohlen failed to produce substantial spectacles in their first two matches for the new season. Both battles only resulted in draws, the more recent one being goalless.

If not for the 0-1 home rout from Barcelona last week, Villarreal would have been unbeaten in more than a dozen consecutive matches in all competitions. They ended their campaign in the last La Liga season with two back-to-back wins from Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad and followed it up with excellent displays in the summer friendlies, including clean sheet triumphs over Middlesbrough and Swansea City. The former Europa League semi-finalists also pulled off some great stunts against Astana in the UEL play-offs, thus booking them a ticket in the Group stage.

Europa League betting tip: Mönchengladbach are potential cluster leaders, and they will start their Group stage campaign with a victory against Villarreal.
