EURO 2016 Qualifiers Preview: Luxembourg vs. Belarus

Updated: September 1, 2014

Match Date: 07 September 2014 (local time)

Venue: Josy Barthel

Luxembourg and Belarus get the opportunity to seek redemption over their dismal EURO performances. While it is true that these squads have not made it past behind the qualifying stage, the one that will emerge as the stronger and better team, gets the opportunity to change its football destiny.

The contenders

Similar to Belarus, Luxembourg has yet to carve its name in EURO’s history.

So far, its biggest accomplishment took place fifty (50) years ago, when they qualified into the quarter-finals via defeating a proud Netherland. But since then, the club has yet to see a major silverware stored in its cabinet for more than a decade.

Nevertheless, Luxembourg showed signs of progress during the 2014 World Cup qualifiers when they stunned Switzerland. However, even such stunning win was not enough to secure their qualification in the said tournament.

Belarus’ competitive EURO record is in dire need of improvement. Since its participation as independent state, the squad has yet to earn its first major title or at the very least, go beyond the qualifying stage.

During the recently concluded World Cup qualifiers, the team also fell short in making it to the prestigious football tournament.

Belarus is hoping that its friendly against Tajikistan shall prepare them in their match against Luxembourg.

Possible head turners

Belarus’ Dmitry Verovtsov has been on a scoring spree in Belarus’ recent matches. Watch out for this dynamic defender as he does not only protect the lead, but also embark on a scoring journey to ensure the team’s victory.

What the odds say

Luxembourg must prepare well as Belarus is hailed as favorite of sports betting sites  such as 12BET. The squad is valued to win at a profitable 1.73.
