Hungary have never won against Romania as far as their last six meetings are concerned. They may have drawn once but the latter have always managed to control their games.

Romania bagged three crucial points in the Euro qualifications, but it was only the first step of a series of grueling encounters that they will have to overcome throughout the process. The success was particularly important for the squad because they defeated what was arguably considered to be the group’s toughest squad: Greece. However, they can never be sure of what is in store for them in the coming weeks.

“I was sure we would win after seeing the Greek players on the pitch at the beginning of the match. They were not at their best and were misplacing lots of passes,” said Romanian midfielder Alexandru Chipciu.

In spite of earning an early lead against Northern Ireland through a Tamas priskin opener, Hungary still failed to bring home all the points in Euro qualifications. The defeat was even more saddening as they incurred it right in their own stadium. They looked to be winning the entire brawl for the majority of the fixture but their opponents made successful late rallies: McGinn fired an equalizer while Lafferty produced the decisive goal.

“I feel this result is a failure. We need to look at what went wrong. We made unforgivable defensive mistakes and had lapses in concentration in the last ten minutes,” said Hungary coach Attila Pintér.

Sports betting tip: As with their past battles, this encounter will render Romania still the better side than Hungary.
