EURO 2016 Preview: Greece vs. Northern Ireland

Updated: October 13, 2014

Match Date: 14 October 2014 (local time)

Venue: Stadio Georgios Karaiskakis, Piraeus

An inspired Northern Ireland looks forward to continuing its winning streak in Greek soil after dominating a hapless Faroe Island. The squad currently occupies the top spot of Group F after earning 6 massive points during its first 2 qualifying matches.

Meanwhile, the host hopes to secure its first win at home. Greece has not won a single match since the qualifier started and this has been hurting their campaign.

The contenders

A clinical Nikos Karelis orchestrated an ecstatic atmosphere within the Greek camp when he netted a goal on the 23rd minute of the match against Finland. Sadly, the squad had to settle for a short-lived euphoria when Finland Jarkko Hurme snatched an equalizer. As a result, Greece, after losing to Romania at home was forced to accept an even steven finish.

But despite the said performance, Claudio Ranieri was satisfied with his team’s performance. He explained that he is delighted with the harmony and balance that occurred among the squad’s veterans and rookies.

Greece is currently at the rock bottom part of the table, with a point under its belt. Ranieri, however, is confident that they will eventually land in a better spot as they try to capitalize on their home court advantage when they go against Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland

A well-deserved win against Faroe Islands catapulted Northern Ireland to the top spot of Group F. The said match ended in 2-0  and Michael O’Neill cannot help but be glad with his camp’s impressive performance.

Needless to say, the said win could readily strengthen the club’s campaign in the tournament. There is a high possibility for Northern Ireland to advance in the latter stages of the European Championship should they continue their stellar display on the pitch.

Possible head turners

Greece shall take the opportunity to feature in the upcoming match, that is of course, expected. They are also the heavy favorite of sports betting sites such as 12BET. However, they should be wary of Gareth McAuley. The West Brom defender has been scoring points for his national team and stopping him might prove to be difficult.
