EURO 2016 Preview: Belarus vs. Slovakia

Updated: October 8, 2014
Slovakia- Marek Hamsik

Match Date: 12 October 2014 (local time)

Venue: Borisov Arena

Despite being grouped with the defending champion and strong online betting favorite, Spain, both Belarus and Slovakia are eager to prove that they are far from being mere pushovers in the competition.

These squads performed well during the qualifier’s first leg and certainly, they have nothing in their minds, but to snatch another important win.

The contenders

The hunger that Belarus feels in terms of securing its first European Championship qualification continues. And perhaps there is no better way than to start its campaign with a draw against the heavy sports betting favorite, Luxembourg.

The stalemate was actually a come from behind rally, thanks to Stanislav Dragun’s successful conversion of Timofei Kalachev’s pass. Apparently, this could readily inspire Belarus to have another impressive display of skills and wit on the pitch.

Slovakia’s keen defence was the key behind their narrow victory against a difficult Ukraine. The squad did not allow any chances for Ukraine to respond when Mak gave them the lead on the 17th.

Prior to the match against Belarus, Slovakia will have to go against Spain first and hopefully, they can still sustain their momentum after a 3-day rest.

Possible head turners

Marek Hamsik is one heck of a dangerous player, which Belarus should be wary of. Hamsik’s assist was crucial to Slovakia’s narrow win against Ukraine last September. Expect the squad’s leader to defy all expectations in the upcoming match.
