Last weekend’s action-packed English Premier League saw interesting rise-and-falls from different league sides. Manchester City fell from their unbeaten league run against prominent rivals Manchester United in Sunday’s Derby. Chelsea’s Fernando Torres resurged in form by leading interim manager Rafael Benitez’ first league win with the Blues over Sunderland. Arsenal scored victory over up-and-coming West Bromwich Albion as legend Thierry Henry watched.

Manchester City 2-3 Manchester United

Defending league champions Manchester City suffered their first defeat against neighbours Manchester United in the Manchester Derby. The Red Devils led through a Wayne Rooney first-half brace. The striker equalled icon Eric Cantona’s league derby goals record of seven.

Yaya Toure and Pablo Zabaleta equalized on the second half. Robin van Persie fired the winning free kick at the bottom-left corner of the woodwork. Commotion soon followed when Rio Ferdinand took a bloodied hit from a coin thrown by a City fan.

Sunderland 1-3 Chelsea

Interim manager Benitez’ desire to seal his legacy at Chelsea proved successful as his side’s victory over Sunderland saw the returning good form of his ex-Liverpool stalwart and striker Fernando Torres.

The Spaniard struck first through an 11th-minute volley. He returned another effort via a penalty conversion second before halftime. Juan Mata’s finish sent Chelsea three-nil, while Sunderland responded through their lone goal from Adam Johnson.

Arsenal 2-0 West Bromwich Albion

Fabled ex-Arsenal striker Henry watched from the stands as he watched his former side win over West Brom. Mikel Arteta proved to be the seminal figure in the match as he scored a brace by converting two penalties.

The victory brought Arsenal back in the running for a fourth-place table spot. Henry, whose efforts for the Gunners brought them league titles in 2001-02 and 2003-04, could spend a third spell at his former club once talks on signing him on a short-term loan this January take off.
