As expected, Atletico Madrid used their wheelhouse to thump Zenit St. Petersburg during their first leg of combat in the UEFA Champions League. While the result was not a surprise, it still exemplified how well the Spanish players fare in continental tournaments.

Miranda netted a header from a corner to start the scoring for the Spanish side. While it was pleasant kick off, the sole goal was less than a guarantee to win the entire match. That said, Zenit identified potential chances and started the second half in a zealous attitude: Thibault Courtois made an outstanding save from an Alexander Kerzhakov header.

In addition to the save, Zenit did cancel out the scoring in the 58th minute with a stellar goal. Kerzhakov assisted striker Hulk, and the latter smashed a powerful left-foot shot past Courtois.

Beyond the 64th minute, however, Atletico Madrid were already in control of the tourney. Turan delivered a goal during this time to gain back the lead in the battle. About 16 minutes later, the side’s domination was already cemented. Baptistao scored a goal for the Spanish troupe and sealed the match picking up the three points from their Russian opponents.

Current rankings place Atletico Madrid on top of the table, seven points ahead of the second placers, Zenit.

Champions League betting tip: For their second leg, Atletico Madrid and Zenit will both try their best to thrash one another. The Russians could score more goals in this bout than they did in the first leg, but the final result will remain in favor of the Spaniards.
