Champions League Match Preview: Chelsea vs. Galatasaray

Updated: March 13, 2014

Match Date: 18 March 2014 (local)

Match Venue: Stamford Bridge

Chelsea are leading the English top-flight football by a good number of points but their form in the Champions League (particularly their past three matches) is not as solid a Blues fan would hope for. Their last two Group stage matches rendered them both losers and winners, succumbing to Basel 1-0 and triumphing over Steaua Bucureşti 1-0. For the Knockout stage’s first leg, they only forced a draw against Galatasaray 1-1, putting them in a less comfortable place as far as achieving a quarter-finals seeding is concerned.

The José Mourinho side were aiming to bag a much-needed boost for the English clubs following two weeks of terrible displays. The fortnight saw Arsenal, Manchester City, and Manchester United incur 2-0 losses in their respective Champions League fixtures.

Overall, Galatasaray possess a very strong form, having avoided serious perils for their last 12 matches in all competitions. The 1-1 stalemate they bagged from Chelsea in the Champions League (first leg of the Round of 16) was not necessarily a bad thing. A shaky opening half hour almost held up Galatasaray boss Roberto Mancini in frustration, but a lucky equalizer by Aurelien Chedjou on Fernando Torres’ opener lowered the pressure on his shoulder.

The Turkish champions waged the Champions League war at the back of a 17-match unbeaten run at the Turk Telecom Arena. Mancini encouraged his team of a maximization of home advantage. However, they repeatedly lost possession in the opening periods and ran short of conversion skills.

Champions league betting tip: Chelsea’s improved attack and confidence will make them the dominant side on this fixture.
