Champions League Match Preview: Basel vs. Chelsea

Updated: November 19, 2013

Match Date: 26 November 2013 (local)

Match Venue: St. Jakob-Park

Their last encounter saw Basel thrash Chelsea in a very impressive away finish 1-2. The clash at Stamford Bridge was initially lorded over by the English squad, but by the second half, the Swiss warriors began dominating the joist through direct counter attacks.

Oscar pulled off a goal for the home side with a strike to the bottom corner at the end of the first half, thus opening the match’s scoring. Basel’s Mohamed Salah cancelled this out when he fired across Blues keeper Petr Cech. As if Chelsea was a monster wall to destroy, they were left stunned after Marco Streller won the Group E opener for the visitors with a late near-post header.

José Mourinho positioned Chelsea on an atypical attacking lineup, starting with two forwards and a pair of mid-fielders, as well as a nine-man defense behind the ball. The team managed to control possession but the chances they created barely materialized.

Pleasant build-up from the visitors which ultimately concluded in a victory put Murat Yakin on a breakthrough. While his men are yet to occupy the group table’s top position, they are headed to a good finish by the closing of the group stage.

Chelsea’s defeat from Basel, however, can be trivialized by the massive wins they had in other fixtures. They currently lead the table, and are four points ahead of their upcoming opponents.

Champions League betting tip: Their previous meeting saw Basel slam Chelsea in a very unexpected turn of events. While this promised them a potential win in their second encounter, it could not guarantee absolute certainty. Chelsea will retaliate, for sure, and they’d be more dangerous this time. Basel could still manage to earn some goals, but this match will eventually finish in favor of the English pack.
