Match Date: 18 February 2014 (local time)
Venue: BayArena

Team Form

Bayer Leverkusen

After more than a decade of waiting, the German outfit, Bayer Leverkusen, gets another chance of making it to the tournament’s quarter-final. Their last quarter-final appearance was in 2002.

Bayer’s goalkeeper, Bernd Leno stated that Sami Hyppia’s “calm manner and ambitions” were highly instrumental to the wave of success that they currently experience. But whether Hyppia’s smooth approach can help them advance in the competition—that is yet to be determined.

Bayer finished second during the group stage of the competition. They trail Manchester United by four (4) points and brag a record of three (3) wins, two (2) losses and a draw during their last six (6) Champions League matches.

In history, the German outfit has been successful in two-legged ties against their French opponents. During the 2006/07 season, they overcame RC Lens with an aggregate score of 4-2. Another classic example is their 5-1 aggregate score over FC Nantes during the 1987/88 competition.

Pitted against other French clubs, Bayer sports an impressive performance at home in which they have managed to win four (4) times, lost once and drew once.

Paris Saint Germain

Paris Saint Germain’s (PSG) top brass, Laurent Blanc promised not to be “complacent” when they face Bayer Leverkusen.

Despite the relief of avoiding the so-called “big fishes” in the tournament, Blanc has no intentions of taking Bayer lightly. He shared that he will maximize the time that he has to study their opponent’s tactical maneuvers on the pitch. In addition, Blanc recognized the fact that Bayer is currently the second best club in Bundesliga and therefore, cannot be easily dismissed as one of the competition’s minnows.

Unfortunately for Blanc, he will not be gracing the BayArena during the upcoming match. Blanc was banned due to a late kick off in the previous Champions League competition.

PSG finished on top of its group with thirteen (13) accumulated points.

Prediction: Paris Saint Germain

PSG has been a familiar face in the competition and evidently, it is their experience that shall bring them the victory over Bayer Leverkusen.
