Match 1: Zambia vs. Ethiopia

Date: January 21, 2013
Time: 23:00 (GMT +08:00)
Venue: Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit, South Africa

Zambia will take on Ethiopia in their first challenge for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Chipolopolo have drawn twice and lost thrice in their last five matches, while the Black Lions have one win, one draw and three draws.

Zambia

  • Highest FIFA Ranking in 2012 – 34
  • Total Africa Cup of Nations Appearances – 15
  • Best Africa Cup of Nations Result – 2012 (Champions)

Zambia are the reigning champions of the competition, having won the title for the first time last year after ousting favourites Ivory Coast in the final. Yet, the Chipolopolo are currently suffering in poor form, as they have scored only one goal in their last five games.

To excel this year, Zambia have to rely on their experience. Striker Christopher Katongo, for one, is a goal threat. He has played internationally in Jomo Cosmos (Premier Soccer League, South Africa), Brondby (Danish Superliga) and Henan Construction (Chinese Super League).

Ethiopia

  • Highest FIFA Ranking in 2012 – 102
  • Total Africa Cup of Nations Appearances – 9
  • Best Africa Cup of Nations Result – 1962 (Champions)

After 30 years, Ethiopia has qualified once again in the competition. They managed to get past through challenges from Benin and Sudan through winning by away goals. Having ranked as low as 140 last year, the Black Lions have resurged by more than 30 ranking places.

Saladin Said, playing as striker from Egyptian Premier League club Wadi Degla, stands as the main goal scorer of Ethiopia. Adane Girma is another striker to reckon, having started from top Ethiopian side Saint George FC as a defender until proving his goal scoring skills from the centre.

Match 2: Nigeria vs. Burkina Faso

Date: January 22, 2013
Time: 02:00 (GMT +08:00)
Venue: Mbombela Stadium, Nelspruit, South Africa

Nigeria and Burkina Faso will clash against one another in their first group stage match for this year’s Africa Cup of Nations. The Super Eagles have won twice and drawn thrice in their last five games, while the Stallions have two wins, two draws and one loss.

Nigeria

  • Highest FIFA Ranking in 2012 – 45
  • Total Africa Cup of Nations Appearances – 16
  • Best Africa Cup of Nations Results – 1980 and 1994 (Champions)

Nigeria has established itself as among the strongest teams in Africa, as they have won the competition twice. They became runners-up four times and third-placers six times – a record that shows their footballing competence in the region.

The Super Eagles have the depth of experience essential to winning titles. Goalkeeper Vincent Enyeana has proven his expertise in the team, particularly during the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Striker Yakubu is another player to watch, being the team’s third-highest all-time scorer.

Burkina Faso

  • Highest FIFA Ranking in 2012 – 66
  • Total Africa Cup of Nations Appearances – 8
  • Best Africa Cup of Nations Result – 1998 (Fourth)

Burkina Faso secured qualification for the competition narrowly after winning at home and losing on away to Central African Republic, with 3-2 on aggregate. Their fourth-place finish in 1998 followed a series of group stage failures – one which they will seek to improve this year.

The strikers have the necessary attacking acumen they could use to advance beyond the group stage. Moumouni Dagao, a striker for Qatari outfit Al-Sailiya, has experience playing in top leagues in France and Belgium. Striker Alain Traore is a young and has a lethal eye for goal.
